EMBER MONTHS: Oyo FRSC public education officer, Odewo warns motorists against speeding on the highway

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned road users to abide by all the traffic regulations, especially during the ember months.

The “Ember months,” spanning from September to December, have long been associated with an increase in road accidents in Nigeria. As the year draws to a close, the roads become busier with increased travel for various events, and unfortunately, this often leads to a spike in road mishaps.

The Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), OYO state command, CRC Mayowa Odewo made this known during an interviw with YES FM’s Oluwasemiloore Ige. He emphasized that while the Ember months are notorious for accidents, drivers should adopt a culture of vigilance and care at all times, not just during these final months of the year.

“The perception that accidents are more prevalent during the Ember months often leads to heightened fear, but the reality is that road safety is a year-round responsibility,” Odewo stated. He pointed out that the increase in accidents during this period is largely due to higher traffic volumes, increased fatigue among drivers, and a rush to meet end-of-year targets.

To combat these risks, CRC Odewo advised that drivers should prioritize the maintenance of their vehicles, ensuring that tires, brakes, and lights are in optimal condition. He also stressed the importance of avoiding overspeeding, reckless overtaking, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Furthermore, Odewo highlighted the role of the FRSC in ensuring road safety through constant monitoring and public education campaigns.

“Our patrol teams will be out in full force during this period, but we also rely on drivers to adhere to traffic rules and cooperate with road safety officials,” he added.

While the Ember months may bring about a heightened awareness of road safety, it is crucial for all road users to remain cautious and responsible throughout the year. By doing so, the roads can be safer for everyone, not just during the end-of-year rush but every day.
