The Director of Nursing Services at Our Lady of Apostles Catholic Hospital, Oluyoro, Ibadan, Rev. Sis. Elizabeth Alabi, has said breastfeeding helps a mother’s uterus return to its normal shape after childbirth, enabling mothers to recover faster.
Rev. Sis. Alabi stated this in an interview with YES FM’s Oluwasemiloore Ige to commemorate the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week.
She noted that breastfeeding offers numerous health benefits to babies, including improved brain development and protection against infections. According to her, the colostrum produced during the first week after delivery is rich in nutrients and antibodies that are essential for strengthening a newborn’s immune system.
The nursing director encouraged mothers to exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first six months of life, describing breast milk as the ideal source of nutrition for infants.
World Breastfeeding Week is observed annually from August 1 to 7 in over 170 countries to raise awareness of the importance of breastfeeding and promote support for nursing mothers.
The theme for the 2026 celebration is “Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works,” with a focus on encouraging governments, health institutions and communities to strengthen existing breastfeeding support systems, monitor progress and adopt proven strategies that improve breastfeeding outcomes worldwide
