At least three persons have died following an attack in Okpolo-Enhwe community, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, while others sustained injuries.
Sources in the community said the victims were attacked while attending to their fishing nets in the early hours of Wednesday. The incident has left residents distressed, with some reportedly leaving their homes for safety.
Community leaders confirmed the fatalities. Chief Kennedy Idolo, President-General of Okpolo-Enhwe, said two men died instantly during the attack, while a third person collapsed from shock and later passed away. He identified two of the deceased as Okoro and Okoeta, noting that all three were married men engaged in fishing activities.
“The community has moved to deposit the bodies at the morgue, but the families have requested to bury them immediately,” Chief Idolo said.
Troops were reportedly deployed to the area to maintain peace and prevent further unrest, and tension remains high in the community.
When contacted, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said he was not yet aware of the incident but would follow up with the local Divisional Police Officer for verification.
