The 34th edition of the most prestigious football competition in Africa THE AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS (AFCON) kicks off tomorrow Saturday 13th, 2024.
The tournament was first held in February 1957 in Khartoum, Sudan, where Egypt defeated the host nation in the final to win the first edition. Since then, the tournament has witnessed a drastic increase in participation from three nations to twenty-four nations. With Egypt leading the chart with seven titles.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria had their first bathe in the tournament in 1963, failing to progress beyond the group stage. Won their first title in 1980, second in 1994, and the third in 2013. With the recent under the guidance of late Stephen Keshi.
Former Super Eagles player, Femi Opabunmi M O N, who was part of the team during the 2002 FIFA World Cup in an interview with Yesfm’s Toyin Adegoke said he believes the team will have a good outing despite the injury worries.
With the kick off billed to start tomorrow, football fans in Ibadan remain pessimistic with the chance of the Super Eagles going all the way to the final.
The likes of Victor Boniface, Wilfried Ndidi and Sadiq Umar are out injured and returned to their clubs. All hope is not lost as the Super Eagles can rely on the prowess of the current African best player Victor Osimhen to get the job done.
