Today is World Braille Day
World Braille Day is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of Braille in promoting literacy among the visually impaired individuals, highlighting the progress made and the continued need for accessible education.
Braille is a tactile writing and reading system for visually impaired individuals which was developed by Louis Braille in 1824, the world celebrates World Braille Day to honor his birthday and to recognize the significance of this system in facilitating independent learning and communication for individuals with visual disabilities.
To shed more light on the crucial role that Braille plays in the lives of visually impaired individuals, Yesfm’s Oluwasemiloore Ige spoke with a representative of the visually impaired community and an advocate for inclusive education, Babatunde Muhammad who noted that Braille is not just a writing system, it is a gateway to knowledge, independence, and empowerment for visually impaired individuals.
Babatunde further highlighted the importance of incorporating Braille into mainstream education, schools and workplaces to ensure equal opportunities for everyone, urging society to recognize the importance of Braille in fostering a truly inclusive and equal society.
