TODAY IS WORLD DIABETES DAY
World Diabetes Day was established in 1991 by the International Diabetes Foundation and the World Health Organisation, aimed at raising awareness about diabetes, its complications, and the importance of early diagnosis and management.
The theme for World Diabetes Day 2023 which is “Access to Diabetes Care” is focused at promoting awareness of metabolic disorders, education on disease, treatment, dietary changes, and exercise to maintain healthy blood glucose levels.
In order to achieve adequate care, Yesfm’s Oluwasemiloore Ige spoke with an Associate Professor of Medicine Consultant Clinical Microbiologist ,College of Medicine/University of Ibadan/ University College Hospital, Ibadan, Dr Samuel Fayemiwo who explained what diabetes is all about.
Dr Samuel highlighted that too much glucose and sugar circulating in the blood stream is one of the causes of Diabetes
He however noted that diabetes cannot be treated but can be controlled.
The doctor noted that the battle against diabetes requires a collective effort, combining individual responsibility, community engagement, and global collaboration to reverse the alarming trend and ensure a healthier future for generations to come.
